A BETTING COMEDY
ON GENERAL' ELECTION
(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—-Copyright). LONDON, I)ee. 12. Sir Joynson llieks and Lord Rotliermerc are engaged in a betting comedy, beneath all the spotlights of the press. Lord Kothermerc declared that a Conservative Party victory a I the general election was impossible. Sir Joynson Hicks at a meeting of the Ladies" Imperial Club, said: “If so, J shall lose a new hat to Rot hermcre.” Lord Kothermerc telegraphed Sir Joynson Hicks: “Suppose you make it money instead of hats. I’ll bet von £IOOO to a ‘tenner’ the Conservatives won’t have a majority at the election.” Sir Joynson llieks telegraphed: “Thanks for sporting offer, hut I do not make money bets. In order to show I am as good a sportsman as you. I’ll bet you two hats Lo one we beat MacDonald and Lloyd George, put gether.”Lord Rothermere has not replied, hut made the. statement: “Hicks is only talking through his hat. lie knows the Conservatives have not tho remotest ettanee. They are whistling to keep up their courage, hut deceive no one.” Late to-night Lady Houston entered the comedy, and threatens lo take all the spotlight. She asked Lord Rolhcrmere whether lie will offer her in thousands, the same odds as lie ode red Sir Joynson llieks.
