A remarkable story was (old at Dow Street oil' how Scotland Yard, acting upon an anonymous lellor. discovered two sale deposits in the name ol exStation Sergt. Goddard, who was in charge at \ ine Street, containing .1 - I2.()0(I in new Hank of England notes of dcnomiiii ions of L'lUO sterling downwards. Goddard was charged with receiving bribes from l.uiga Rebiifli, a prominent night club manager, win was running the \ ictors ( lub in 192*1. with Mrs Meyriek, known as the Night ( luh Queen. They arc also charged with giving bribes. Iho prosecution pointed out the anonymous letter accused Goddard ol flagrantly accepting bribes. lie added considerably to his house properly and acquired a motoi car. Goddard supplied an explanation to the effect that reliable racing information and dealings in loieign c-ui renev were responsible lor his financial posit ion.
The prosecution pointed out he was a trusted officer ot twenty-eight yea is service and was employed to watch night-clubs.
