GENERAL ELECTION

POSTAL AND ABSENT VOTES

[By Telegraph, Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Nov. 15. Tlio number of absent, postal and sea men’s votes will make several changes possible. These votes run into hundreds in practically every electorate, and some well over a thousand. WELLINGTON. Nov. 15. For the Wellington North seat, an amended return makes an alteration in the position, whieh now is:—Sir John Luke (R) 5070; 0. H. Chapman (I) 5062. Majority for Sir J. Luke 8. Air Chapman on Wednesday night was credited with a majority of 64. This was through a package of 31 votes being credited to Mr Chapman instead of Sir J. Luke. LONDON PRESS COMMENT. LOAN POLICY CITED. LONDON, November 15. The “Daily Telegraph” says: New Zealand polities never lack the dramatic quality. The country will now again experience the disadvantage of the three-party system. The difference as between the Reform and the Liberal programmes is almost too subtle to be distinguished here, but 't may be suspected that . Sir Joseph Ward’s advocacy of a development loan of seventy millions, from which he would make advances to the farmers on easy terms, and his proposal to subsidise minor industries, has pleased many voters who regard Air Coates as being an unduly stern economist.” The “I)a : ly Chronicle” remarks: “New Zealand has been through a most remarkable election. The United Liberal Party under Sir Joseph Ward lias scored a striking success at short notice. This result was obtained by Liberals definitely opposing both the other parties and offering the voters who disliked either extreme a distinct third alternative.”
