As the result of an early morning fire a six-roomed farmhouse, owned and occupied by .Mr P. The contents, \ allied at £IOO, are uninsured. I BAND CONTEST. WEST COAST ENTRIES. WANGANUI, Nov. That the New Zealand Band Contest Executive were wise in getting the Crystal Palace Judge, T. .1. Reid, of Wales, to adjudicate the contest to lit; held at Wanganui in February next, and Air J. Trussed (Queensland) as solo judge, is demonstrated by the excellent entries received, no lower than 27 hands having entered in A and B Grades. The former carries 12 entries of the best hands in the Dominion. and B Grades In. It is believed that this constitutes a record. Solo entries to hand are also exceptionally large. A feature of the entries is that two hands are coming from Granity and Greyinouth. CAR goes over bank. TAUAIARUNUT, Nov. o. As the result of the lights failing, a car driven by IT. J. Carrington, of Waitanga. went over a steep bank on Okahukuru Hill early this morning. Carrington was removed to. the hospital unconscious and two lady passengers nvere severely shaken. DINGHY TRAGEDY. WELLINGTON, Nov. 5. Thomas Turner, aged 20, was drowned through a- dinghy capsizing near Island Bay on Saturday night. He and a companion were setting a fishing net, when the boat capsized in a squally sea. Both got hold of the upturned boat, but it turned over again, and Turner lost his grip. He was never seen again. His companion was driven ashore 'by the wind. “BLUE CROSS’ HOSPITAL. AUCKLAND, Nov. 3. The first “Blue Cross” hospital for animals in Auckland is about to bo established at New Lynn, by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, under arrangemnt with Mr H. W. Canberry, one of the honorary veterinary surgeons. It is intended that the buildings shall be ready lor use by Christinas in order that owners may la* able to leave their pets at the 'institution during the holidays.
