RETIRING PRIMATE

FAREWELL SERMON

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright).

LONDON, Nov. I

fn his farewell sermon at Canterbury Cathedral which was broadcast throughout Britain, the Archbishop of Canterbury. Dr Randall Davidson, likened himself to Moso.s standing on Alt. Pisgali, looking back through anxious years, but certain that the people lie had loved and led were destined to see greater tilings than lie had shared. ■Moses had marked his people’s power and promise under Gods guiding hand, and he accordingly had looked forward hopefully.

“To-night,” continued the Archbishop, “I also look backward, outward, and onward. I. do not think 1 under-rate the variance that is within the church, but some of that variance is the outcome of an eager life, ’let the controversies have touched the most sacred questions. A\ e are. all blameable. At least, 1 am blameable. God forbid that I should belittle the gravity of such a question as that of the ministration of the Eucharist. lor a solution of the variances, it necessitates considerable patience and abundant prayer. Such questions have been raised and solved in England before, and will, under God’s hands, be resolved again. It would be a graceless, thankless mistake to regard the surface difference,s as the outstanding fact in church to-day. Looking back for half a century, I am firmly convinced that the Church is far stronger and more zealous, and has a deeper vision of God’s purpose, than vlien my working days began. Even the Prayer Book discussions have evolved a more thoughtful, spirit and unity of purpose and prayer.”
