FEDERAL ELECTIONS
THE NOMINATIONS
(Australian Press Association)
SYDNEY, October 19
The nominations closed to-day for the Commonwealth elections on November 14th.
Practically all of the sitting members were nominated, but a sensation was caused when it was disclosed that Mr Robert Cook, the returning member for the Indi electorate in Victoria, a Government supporter, had omitted to nominate. It was a pure oversight. .
The result is that the Labour candidate, -Mr Paul Jones, has automatically been elected, and a safe Government seat has been lost. Mr Jones has had no previous experience in Parliament. Three Government supoprters in New South Wales have, been returned unopposed. There are to be contests all over the States, excepting in one or two electorates.
There also are to he contests for the Senate seats in every State.
The political parties represented are the Nationalists and Country Party nominees (who stand behind the Bruce Government) ; the official Labour candidates and about eight independents.
