STRIKE ENDING

SYDNEY, Oct. 17.

The AVharf Labourers’ Union here to-day called the strike off. It whs decided to register to-morrow in a body and also to resume work. The resolution was carred almost unanimously. The Port Phillip Stevedores’ Associaion, by four hundred votes, decided against a resumption of work, but agreed at a later time to take a secret ballot on the., question of the resumption of work. 1

The shipowners intend to ask Chief Judge Dethridge, of the Arbitration Court on Friday to delete from Judge Beeby’s award all the clauses in relation to preference for the AVaterside AVorkers’ Federation members, and for an addition whereby a federation of other labour may be on a weekly basis, with a week’s notice on either side. The watersiders also decided to remain at work. The feeling here is that the strike will collapse before the end of the week.

Almost every passenger vessel along the coast is at present idle. The engineers, stewards and cooks are fervently hoping the end will soon come. . BRISBANE, Oct. 17.

The watersiders here to-day decided to aocept the Beeby Award, and will take out licenses, providing that the free labour is removed from the wharves.

The shipowners have advised the local Seamen’s Union that they intend to retain the services of volunteer crews. Advices from Newcastle and Adelaide are that work’ is now proceeding smoothily at those ports/ ,

SYDNEY AVATERSIDERS EJECT THE COMMUNISTS. \;

SYDNEY, Oct. 17

At a stop-work meeting of the Sydney Branch of the AVaterside AVorkers’ Federation to-dav, several Communists were ejected. The branch decided to withdraw from the Sydney Labour Council until that body conforms with the policy of the Australian Labour Party, which in effect means that the Federation disapproves of the extremist tactics of the Labour Council, led by Mr Jock Garden and the Commuuist minority.
