AUSTRALIAN MEAT
PROSPECTS IN AMERICA
COL. YOUNG’S MISSION
(Per Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright).
(Received this day at 10 a,m.) NEW YORK, Oct. 17
Colonel Young interviewed, said after a fortnight’s study of meat conditions in United States and Suuada, he believes Australian chilled meat transhipped from San Francisco in refrigerated railway cars might profitably enter the Eastern American market at figures which would be attractive here, in view of current high meat prices. He pointed out- that Australian chilled meat would be kept for the same length of time in being shipped to United States as Argentine chilled meat, which goes to London. The length of time from Sydney to an American port would be equal to the length of time from Buenos Aires ,to London and the length of time from an American port to the meat’s ultimate destination would be about equal to that of conveying meat from London docks to Smithfield and thence to the retailers.
Young had a telephonic conversation with Doctor Mohler, Chief of the Bureau of Animal Industry in United States Department of Agriculture, in which he assured tlfe latter that the meat certified by the Australian Inspection Department could bo accepted iby United States or any other country.
Dow, of the' Australian Office here, will further discuss the matter with Dr Mohler next week. Colonel Young sailed to-day for Europe.
