SIR OLIVER LODGE. I United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—popvriglit). < (Received this day at 9.25. a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 30. “War is an ugly, disgraceful, dirty and objectionable business,” said Sir Oliver Lodge in,a presidential address to the brotherhood at Southampton. “We ought to be ashamed of it digging ourselves into mud, 'pretending to be a civilised people,'crawling about under water and sinking one another. It is no occupation for a gentleman. War does not settle disputes, it leaves them to be settled.”
TREASURY RETURNS. \ LONDON, Sept. 30. The six monthly treasury returns are as follows: —-Reserve £312,425,000 compared with £328,587,000 last year. Expenditure • £388,393,000 compared with £384,757,000, a deficiency of £75,967,000 compared with £56,169,000 last year. The principal decrease was in income tax which dropped from £50,859,000 to £55,231,000, but death duties wore unexpectedly high and yielded £41,750,000 compared with x. 350,050,000 last year. Though the Chancellor anticipated a decrease lie is budget-ting for, £72,000,000 for the complete year.
SPANISH PLOT. PARIS, Sept. 30. “Le Journal’s” San Sebastian correspondent alleges" that the De Rivera Government is contemplating wholesale arrests and severe penalties, after the discovery of a new plot to' overthrow the Directory. The conspiracy is believed to be widely supported by Spanish exiles abroad, also inhabitants of the province of Navacre where there is intense discontent. The municipal council of Pampleuiia which' recently resigned has now been replaced. ,
LABOUR LEADER’S DEMAND. LONDON, Sept. 30. Mr Ramsay MacDonald speaking at Birmingham, demanded that Mr Baldwin officially publish both the French and British' agreement correspondence, comprising the preceding negotiations and that the Government must also act vigorously at the next meeting of the disarmament prepartory committee, making positive proposals ' for a' disarmament' 'conference as quickly as possible.
