CROSSING TRAGEDY

FIVE PERSONS KILLED. (Australian Press Association). - (United Service). . (Received this day at 10.30. a.m.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 1. Five persons were killed in a level crossing accident near Geelong, when a special train crashed into a motor wagon on which a number of people were returning from the Catholic cemetery at Werraibee, where Cardinal Ceretti had been officiating. The killed are: Leslie Hargreaves, 25; Fred Leary, 20; Bessie and Eileen Smallcombe and Helen Kelly, all fitteen. Six others of the same family were injured.

ANOTHER SMASH, ADELAIDE, Oct. 1. A motor train bound from Moanta to Adelaide, collided with a motor lorry at Snowton level crossing. George Ridgway, aged sixty, was killed and eight members of the same family injured. All were performers in a touring circus. The accident occurred through the engine of the car stalling on a level crossing at the very moment the train was due.
