SCHOOLS VISIT
HOKITIKA SCHOLARS TOUR, ASHBURTON, Sept. 24. The pupils of the Hokitika. District High School, numbering some fifty, with several teachers, who are the guests of pupils of the Ashburton Technical School, paid a visit on Monday to some of the factories in Ashburton. The boys visited the Canter bury Roller Flour Mills, and the girls were shown over the Crown Flour Mills. Later in the morning the party re-assembled and inspected the Ashburton Woollen Mills. At each place the process of the manufacture was explained in detail to the visitors. Rugby and basket-ball matches were plaved in the afternoon. At Rugby Hokitika proved superior, winning by.. 11 points to 6. Tries were scored for the winners by Smith, King and Stapleton, the last-named con verting one. Dalton scored two unconverted tries for Ashburton. The basket-ball matches were both won by Ashburton, the scores being Ashburton A 15, Hokitika xV 3; Ashburton B 13, Hokitika B 1.
A welcome was extended the visitors {by the principal of the Technical School .(Mr R, J. Thompson) that evening, when they were entertained at a dance in the Technical School. Mr E. Partridge replied. During the evening songs were given by Miss Nancy Bishop and a sailor’s hornpipe was danced by Miss E. Weston. Music was supplied by Misses M. Millers (piano), L. Mills (violin) and T. Brown (xylophone). The visitors returned to Hokitika this morning. .
