THE - DEATH ROLE. Australian Press Assn. —United Servioe (Received this day at noon.) NEW YORK, Sept. 20. A message from West Palm Beach states the deaths at Florida as a re'sult of Sunday’s hurricane stood between seven and eight hundred toJ day.
HARROWING CONDITIONS. rushing in assistance. WASHINGTON, Sept. 20. With' estimates placing the total Florida dead at eight hundred and fifteen hundred persons missing, re- ' ' ports of rioting negroes indicate a vast problem facing the relief work-
ers. A grave condition exisits at Pahohn where an epidemic o'f typhoid is already gaining ground. The Red Cross in an effort to check the spread of • the disease is continuing to resort to f wholesale .burials of unidentified dead. An eye witness declared Pahohn was the worst affected (bv the storm which raced across Lake O’Keeehobeo and swept the village and surrounding country. It is estimated that nearly every building was demolished. Dead bodies were discovered floating on the lakes and swamps nearby. Serum and chlorine is being rushed to all the areas. . . Governor Martin, of Florida, advised that aid should be rushed fby boat owing to the uncertain conditions of the railways. The coastal railway has established a partial service, but has abandoned regular schedules and has put all trains at the. disposal of relief work. It is reported that highways leading to Palm Beach are now .partially in use, over which automobiles and wagons are employed in • bringing aid. All animal life throughout the stricken State is seriously at-. ■ fected. Tropical Ibirds were killed hy thousands by the storm. . The toll on the North Atlantic coast now totals four dead. New York Metropolitan district reports of marine collisions and wrecks continue none of which are regarded ns serious. Advance warnings of the storm enabled shippers to anchor their boats in sheltered places outside the storm.
BYR.D’S SHIP SAIDS. NEW YORK, Sept. 20. A Norfolk (Virginia) message says Byrd’s expedition whaler Larsen, with four aeroplanes and three P’° s ’ sailed to-day. B.vrd will join the Laisen at San Pedro. California.
