VALEDICTORY.

A very successful function was held in the social hall of the Mental Hospital on Thursday evening, when the members of the staff and their friends met to say farewell and make presentations to Nurses Hoffmann and Singer.

The Matron and her nurses committee had arranged the decorations with artistic effect. Multi-coloured streamers and balloons brightened the hall’s appearance, whilst Chinese lanterns shell a soft radiance over the scene. The presentations, which consisted of a nurse of sovereigns for Nurse Hoffmann, and two handsome cut-glass salad howls for Nurse Singer, were made by Dr Buchanan. Dr Buchanan in his speech relerrcd to the two nurses length ot service and efficiency; and expressed his regret that they were‘leaving the institution, for, he continued, they possessed ail experience which was all important in the administration ot a hospital. Ho wished them both happiness and success in their new ventures. Messrs Hoffmann and Hutchison responded on behalf of the recipients. A dainty supper was then dispensed by the committee, and greatly appreciated by the large number of guests present. Immediately following supper dancing commenced and was continued for some hours.

During an interval between the dances a presentation was made tq Dr Buchanan. The presentation, which consisted el an artistically catted .Maori walking-stick, was the gift of the Tamui family. Mr A. Lawn in a felicitous.speech made the presentation to Dr Buchanan, who in his reply expressed his thanks and appreciation. Miss R. Morris gave a vocal solo.

The thanks of the committee are expressed to the members of the Black Hand Orchestra, whose services were voluntarily rendered, and whose musical numbers made possible the splendid success of the function.

Messrs Stankov, Lynch, and F. Groufsky, junr. proved themselves capable M.C.’s, whilst -Messrs Bleach and Raine gave extras. ith the singing of “ Aiild Land Syne ” and the National Anthem a very enjoyable function terminated.
