WESTLAND COMPETITIONS
The Westland Competitions which opened successfully to-day and is being continued at the Princess Theatre to-1 night, will be continued again at 0.30 .o’clock on Monday morning. There is a full day’s programme as follows: -Morning. 9.30 o’clock, recitation “Grandpapa’s Spectacles,” 21 competitors ; corps de ballet (under * 10) 1 entry ; piano solo, “ llalancelie,” 11 competitors; song in character (9 to 12), 3 competitors. Afternoon, 2 o’clock.—Pallet, pas-de-seul (10 to 12). 6 competitors; humorous recitation (under 12) 12 competitors; piano duet, Second Mazurka, 4 competitors; ballet, pas-de-seul, 9 competitors; recitation, “The House by the Side of the lload,” 3 competitors ; regarding at sight (12-15) 2 competitors ; soprano solo, “Snowflakes,” 2 competitors; recalls for day. Evening, 7.45 o’clock.— Playctte ; recitation, “ The Chambered Nautilus,” 5 competitors; baritone solo, 3 competitors; classic ensemble (under 14) 2 competitors; choirs, 2 competitors; recital, “Portia’s Reply,” 5 competitors; classic solo (over 14) 5 competitors ; playctte. OPENED TO-DAY. The third series of the Westland Competitions opened tit the Princess Theatre punctually at 10.30 o’clock this morning. Although the weather was wet there was quite a fair attendance evidencing the public interest in the festival which gives every promise of passing off successfully.
The opening elocutionary piece was for children from 9 to 12 years of age—- “ The Four Sunbeams.” There were 17 competitors and nil appeared before the Judge, Mr R. T. Bush. The second number in the forenoon was the pianoforte solo " Golliwog’s Cake Walk,” for which there were seven competitors, followed by the song in character for competitors from 12 to 15 years, there being two competitors. Mr E. -Moss is the judge of the musical section.
There is a- full programme for the •afternoon session, and again to-night the theatre will be fully occupied from 7.5,') o’clock. Doors open this evening at 7 o’lenck. admission upstairs 2s, downstairs Is. children half-price. Season tickets are obtainable at the llonrs.
