A LION LOOSE. LONDON, June 5. A lion escaped from its cage yesteidav at Southampton after it had been landed from the German East African liner Ussukuma, which had arrive' from the Cape. The animal defied capture for neaiiy a quarter of an hour. It broke loose w liile ’ passengers. \ and officials were passing baggage through tlie Customs shed. The cage containing the lion was bein'* lifted on to a weighing machine when tlie bottom fell out and tlie lion escaped. . ■ , ~ Tlie animal dashed wildly round the shed, scattering people in all directions and proving too crafty and elusive for tlie quayside workmen and the two native keepers who tried to capture it. Immediately tlie lion broke loose the doors at one side of the shed were closed and the passengers rushed to the train, from the windows of wlncli they watched the chase. . , 0 After the hunt had lasted for 1minutes the lion cornered itself near r telegraph box and the two native attendants secured it.
