TUNNEY WINS
IN ELEVENTH ROUND, (Extraordinary). NEW YORK, July 26. Tunney won. DESCRIBED IN PROGRESS (By Wireless). Reception is difficult. Wellington is having a difficulty in reception. At 1.28 it was announced the third round was in progress. In this round Heeney shook Tunney up. The latter nearly dropped as the result of a hard left. Tunney delivered a hard left on Heeney at the end of the round. 2YA Wellington station is receiving its report by wireless telegraphy and states receiving conditions are improved. The report will lie put directly on the air. The announcer describes the round briefly ns brief -messages are received. 1.30 Ith. round: Heeney not so good on the in-fighting. Tunney drove in a hard left following Heenev’s hard right. Heeney continues the aggressor and finished strong at the end of the round. In the fourth round Heeney drove Tunney into the ropes. Another account said Tunney went through the ropes. In the sth. round Tunney went down but was up again. Tunney opened up with three hard lefts. Heeney gave a bard right. After rising Heeney delivered a hard left. Messages misty.
FROM CHRISTCHURCH STATION
7th. round 2.5 p.m: Tunney landed hard right to heart. Heeney landed hard right to body shortly after. Marks show on Tunney’s face. Tunney was side-stepping Heeney. Oli.Cli. Station then crossed over to ringside at New York, where ringside noises could he heard. The better broadcast came from Christchurch, Wellington station being weak.
At 1.55 Christchurch put on the broadcast from the ring-side and the iron." could bo heard. There was a medley of voices and it was difficult to distinguish the words. Later, the Christchurch announcer gave an outline of the 10th. round. He stated both were fighting strong, but Tunney was outboxing Heeney. Tunney was getting the better of Hcenev. wlio was not having a good run. Almost immediately afterwards the announcement came through that Tuuney had won on the 11th. round, and it was added later than Heeney’s seconds threw in the towel. Three cheers were given for Heeney over the wireless.
ANOTHER ACCOUNT. WELLINGTON, July 27. , The following details of the fight were obtained by radio broadcast. First round, good. Second, good; fight full of interest. Tunney is slowing. Heeney landed blow which slowed him up. v Third round, Tunney landed hard right to Feeney’s head. Heeney landed had left to Tunney’s body which shook the champion badly. Tunney was nearly dropped by a hard right to the face. Heeney now landed left to the body and this ended the third
round. Fourth round, Heeney drove a hard rigid! to the fate which staggered Tunney. Tunney then landed a hard left. Henney is not good at in-fighting. Heeney landed Tunney against the ropes.' Heeney is aggressive and going very strong at the end of -fourth round. Fifth round:— Tunney lands three hard lefts to Hceney’n face. Heeney shot in a hard left. Heeney went down under a heavy blow, but was up again arid landed Tunney a hard left to the slioitklcr. Sixth round—Both exchanging bard lefts and rights. Heeney is a hard man, and so far the fight is Tunnoy’s on points. Heeney is after his opponent all the time. Tunney, however, has the advantage of a greater reach. Seventh round: —Tunney landed a hard right to the heart. Heeney returned a hard right, to the body and this was followed by a succession of rights by botli boxers. Tunney is sidestepping Heeney and Heeney leaves marks on the champion’s face with hard lefts.
Eighth round :— Heeney has a hard jaw. Heene.v’s left eye is closed. Something wrong with him. It is not -from a blow. Tunney opened strongly and nit Heeney twice hard on the face. The challenger’s eyei suffered in consequence 'and at the end it Mas blackened. Ninth .'round Heeney lands a hard right to the body - find staggers Tunney. Keeney’s body does not look too well, and at the end of the round lie was groggy. Tunney is still leading oil points. Tenth round, both fighters landed hard rights and lefts. Tunney is outboxing Heeney. Tunney now lands three effective blows. Tunney is pounding Heeney on the body and Heeney. is apparently knocked out, but be recovered very quickly. In tile eleventh round, Keeney’s seconds threw in the towel and the fight ended— Tunuey’s fight.
ABOUT DEMPSEY. (Received this day at 10.40 a.m.) NEW YORK, July 26. Reports from Yankee Stadium state .Tack Dempsey’s presence at the ringside eliminates the possibility of his acting as Heenev’s second, which suggests that ' Rickard’s statement was merely made to assist ticket sales. Ringside odds were quoted at three to one on Tunney, with a surprising amount of Heeney money in sight. Bernard and John Mortimer, Heeney s English managers,' bet 11,500 dollais on the challengers at these odds. Dempsev’s wife accompanied him to the ringside. The ex-champion received an enthusiastic reception.
