Speaking to the Address-in-Eeply debate in the Legislative Council on Thursday last, the Hon H. L. Michel said that it was more than regrettable that the Samoan question should have been used during the last twelve months, not only to discredit the Government but to discredit New Zealand in (the eyes of the world. They had been told that it v-xs Dm “Big stick policy” that had brought about the trouble, but the Mandates Commission had held that if there had been more big stick used the trouble would not have arisen. Continuing, Air Michel said that it was regrettable in the extreme that the problem of unemployment should have been used as a stick with which to heat the Government. The number of unemployed in New Zealand was fair less in proportion to the population than in any other overseas State. He thought that the entry of large numbers of women into the labour market was a largely contributing cause of unemployment. Another cause was the great development of motor traffic which had displaced large numbers of men formerly connected with horse traffic. A third cause of unemployment was the completion of many large public works. It was the duty of everyone to assist the Government to solve the problem. Alen’s Tweed Overcoats, 100 to choose from. St. Mary’s Church, Rimu, held a good congregation hist evening when the parishioners gathered to witness and to say the newly erected Stations of the Cross, dedicated to the memory of their late Pastor—the Rev. Father Riordan. Rev. Father o‘Dolierty, the present parish priest, officiated, and preached the occasional sermon. He briefly explained the object of the gathering, namely to do honour to the late Rev. Father, whose memory they so deeply revered. He then spoke on the significance of the Stations of the Cross, and the benefits to be derived, spiritually, from the making of this devotion. The discourse throughout was beautifully given, the trend of the subject being followed with rapt attention. The Stations are a very fine work of art, and are a- most fitting memorial to the one whose memory they honour. During the ceremony appropriate music was rendered. Thirty-six Inch Crepe De Cliene.
