THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
Presidential Election. In the present instance the chief difficulty that the Republicans have to face is the necessity for considering the farmers of the Middle West. When Mr Cfoolidge recently vetoed the Mc-Nary-Haugen Bill, he drove the farmers into hitter hostility; and Curtis and Lowden, two of Hoover’s rivals, are exploiting this prejudice in thenown favour. It is said that the Middle West agricultural States will vote solidly for the Democratic nominee if the Republicans choose Hoover. The heavy fall in stocks reported from Wall Street may indicate not-so much dislike of Hoover as fear of a Republican debacle if Hoover proves to be the best man that the party can find to put up against the redoubtable Democratic Governor of New York, A 1 Smith. —Auckland JStar.
