A fatality occurred at Die Curd ill mine, Westport, on Monday morning when James Moiling, a married man, aged about 55, was killed by a fall of coal from the roof. The late Mr Moiling was a member of the co-operative party which was working at the Clay Pit Mine, hut ceased work there when a fire broke out about two months ago. The accident occurred at 10.30. Tho late Air Moiling leaves a widow hut no children. He saw service in the South African War, being in tho Imperial Forces and was a member.ot the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces during the Great War.

A narrow escape from an accident such as has Icon long threatening occurred on the arrival of the ferry steamer, Maliono, at Lyttelton on Sunlay morning. Tt is the practice of the stewards when the steamers are approaching the wharf to jump ashore from the ship’s side. On Sunday morning, as the Maheno drew near the wharf, a steward jumped and fell full length at the edge of the wharf -without, however, injuring himself. He was followed by another, who jumped, and, stumbling, fell between the ship and tile edge of the wharf. The man clung precariously for u moment and was quickly hauled to safety by two of his mates.- He missed being crushed to death by seconds only.
