The knighting of Captain Wilkins is a recognition of the greatest ieat of his adventurous career—the flight over the North Pole in an aeroplane from Alaska to Spitsbergen. This flight was hailed hv several American newspapers as the greatest over made, which was praise indeed, lor AA ilkins is an Australian. Sir George had made two previous attempts to fly over the Arctic. The lirst reached its ulimax in May, 1926. when a.ll was ready for the linal dash over the ice. hut they were fog-bound and after they had spent nsxious weeks hoping for suitable weather the project had to he abandoned. The second attempt, in Mav, 1927. was equally unxuocessl ut. although Captain Wilkins and his pilot, Alger Graham, suffered severe privations and took grave risks in their attempt to find land in the northern Arctic. Several times it was feared that they had been lost.
