HISTORY OF THE GAS. (United Press Association. —By Ele-tric Telegraph.- -Copyright.) LONDON, ATay 21. Tho latest details of casualties in the Hamburg explosion show that thcro are seven dead, while one hundred are suffering. The tank belonged to a chemical firm that was responsible for supplying war-time poison gas. At present it is in liquidation. The tank was awaiting removal abroad. The war-time name of the gas was “Yellow Cross.” It is an invisible gas. and, being heavier than air, it lingers close to the ground, ft is tlillitill to disperse. -When ft is weak, it is hardly noticeable. When it is inhaled, although there is no immediate consequence, the person is liable to become suddenly worse, a.nd to die some days afterwards.
THE GAS DISASTER. (Received this dav at 5.30 a.m.) BERLIN, -May 22. Ninety-five are still in the hospital at Hamburg, seven are in a critical condition and tlie state of twenty-six is serious, though the doctors hope to save them. Gas-helmeted men are parading the deserted streets, reminiscent of war time. It will he days before tlie people can return to their homes. Officials deny any knowledge of the existence of gas, though there are allegations that it was manufactured in Russia as an emergency smsply against disturbances during the Ruhr occupation.
