MOTOR BOAT RACING
YESTERDAY’S EVENTS. A large crowd assembled oil the waterfront and bridge yesterday afternoon to witness the first series of races for the Westland Speed Boat Handicap Challenge Cup presented by Mr J. J. Mclntosh. All the officials were present and the races were rim off without any bitch, the handicapping giving satisfaction to all the competitors. In the first two rounds four boats competing while there were five in the last two. Owing to engine trouble developing in the Checkmate just prior to the race there was some little delay in commencing. but this delay was unavoidable as one of the conditions of the race called for four starters and at this stage the Nippy which arrived later was not ready.
While waiting to start the remaining boats gave an exhibition race and the Darktown Band under the leadership of Mr Sid Brooks enlivened proceedings on me river. The races were over a three-mile course, four rounds being run off. and the boats i.'handicapped after each round.
Air F. (!. Andrews won the race or points and holds the Cup until challenged.

Alucli interest was centred round the fourth race which was the deciding race for the Cup. the points Llien being Buzz Olf 10, Playmate 10. Cheerio 8. The Playmate (SOsec.) however, soon left no doubt as to the issue, as her engine which had not run well during the other races developed a fine hurst of speed and she ran in an easy winner bv half a lap, cutting 64,see. off her previous best time. Tbe Cheerio and Buzz-Off ran a close finish for sc.end place, the Cheerio winning by a couple of lengths. The .final points were: Playmate (F. G. Andrews) 15, Buzz-Off t.f. N. Robinson) 12, Cheerio (M. Mandl) 11. The Buzz-Off won the cup presented for most consistent running.
