EAST COAST RAILWAY

TAURAXGA EX FETE. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) TAURAXGA. Alarch 28. Tntira nga’x gala day, cloudless throughout, and marking the opening of the railway to Wailii. thus (onnecting the Ray of Plenty district with the main railway system of the North Island, will live long in memory. It was the largest gathering in the district's history, thousands of people from many parts of the Bay of Plenty and hundreds of visitors from further afield visiting the town, which was decorated with greenery, hunting, and electric lighting. Alany treasured flags of native tribes were prominently displayed. and Afaoris were present in full force, taking a part in the general rejoicing.

Trains from Waihi and from Tanentua, tlie eastern railhead, brought a thousand visitors, including the Prime Minister. A ribbon was cut by Mrs MacMillan, wife of the member for the district, and the Prime Minister was accorded a warm welcome, both by pakehas and Maoris. The Parliamentary party included Messrs Coates. McLeod, Williams, Hockly, Samuel. Rhodes. L. Martin, and H. Holland (Christchurch North). An official luncheon was altended by representative men from all parts of the district, at which several toasts wore honoured, including those of the Prime Minister. Minister of. Public Works. Parliament, the East Coast Railway, and The Visitors. A procession, headed bv the combined Taurangn-Tepnko Bands, marched through the principal streets to the Domain, where a program me of school sports was gone through, and prizes were presented by Mr Coates, who met with an ovation. Various acquatie sports were also held and the Maoris entertained visitors throughout the-day. To-night a torchlight procession was held, and the night was given over to general hilarity with Maori entertainments on tlm Strand. The day passed without n mishap of any kind, and the arrangements reflect the greatest credit on Mr P>. C. Robbins (Secretary), and fhe Executive Committee and various subcommittees.
