The girl’s parents have been living apart. hast night the father visited the house in a most excited state, and after a heated discussion with his wife, took the girl away, latter he returned and said. “ Little Elaine is now out of trouble.” He produced a razor and a bottle of ehlorodync, and said he would also finish himself. After an all-night search, the police found Oreen in a suburban park, weak from loss of blood from a deep gash in the arm. As they approached he drew and broke a l.vsol packet and drank the contents. Before he died an hour later, he confessed that he killed Elaine in order to save her from a lile of misery. FLOOD ItEPOUTS. SYDNEY, Feb. 20. The weather has eased and there was no rain in Sydney to-day. It is still threatening and more is predicted. Tic coastal conditions arc -';li dirty with rough setts. Trains are again cancelled, pending the retreat of the flood waters and repairs. further flood damage. SYDNEY, Feb. 20. The latest reports indicate that the seriousness of the floods hot a North and South has been increased by incessant heavy storms in the Iknvi rina district, making the work oi repairing I railway lines increasily difficult. AVasliaways have keen repaired, hut within a few hours of being mended the line again was broken. Stockowners in tile .Murray Valley are preparing for more serious floods. At Grafton tlio- river is again rising. Torrential rain is still lulling ami further Hooding seems inevitable. At Uiniarra the Clarence river broke its hanks and Hooded the country for miles. Large areas of farm, lands, including aieas under cane and maize, are submerged. Flood boats have been arranged to leave Uiniarra at daybreak to pick up settlers whose lives are threatened by the oncoming waters. It is stated that twelve families are in danger. The Richmond river is in high flood. In the K.yoglo district a fall of fifteen inches of rain caused, a rise of fifty feet in the water, which entered the western portion of the town, and which isolated many. Houses are ad.imerged. The police warned the residents beore the flood reached the maximum if sixty feet, and. then it commenced ;o recede. Telegraph lines are down at Kvogle. [t is difficult to obtain news from centres up the river. It is still raining. A message received from Junoe rc,orts the weather is fine and the wnt>rs are falling. Orange experienced ino of the biggest floods in its history. The lower parts of the town vero flooded to a depth of four t«it. Reports from Kvogle state a man ind his wife, named Smith, were Downed in Gracy's Creek at Oakley Park. An elderly man. John Brennan, was dso drowned. MELBOURNE, Feb. 20. Heavy rain continues to fall in many parts of the State. No serious damage is reported. Rivers, however, continue to rise and should the lain continue there is a danger of serious flooding. All low-lying areas near Ruthenglen are submerged, the water being two feet deep.
