He was removed to the Hospital where lie died after an operation, on Saturday evening. HOUSE BURNT. AUCKLAND, Feb. 20. An eight-roomed house in Pa.nmuro Road, owned by Daniel Ryan, was totally destroyed by fire last night. Mr and Airs Ryan escaped when the building was enveloped in flames. CAR ACCIDENT EPISODE. The bystanders evidently being of the opinion that the occupants of the car had not taken duo care, assumed n most hostile attitude, and were endeavouring to drag the driver and his companion from their seats when the police intervened.-. The condition of the girl. Alonica, is fairly serious. BOY DROWNED. AUCKLAND, Fob. 20. The capsize of a canvas canoe off Stanley Bay on Sunday afternoon, resulted in the drowning of John Chaplin aged 10. eldest son of W. R. Chaplin. The hoy’s companion, Leslie Abrahams, owner of the canoe, was rescued by a yachtsman. He endeavoured to support Chaplin, but was unable to retain bis hold, Chaplin disappearing under the canoe. The yachtsman promptly dived in in an endeavour to locate the bov, but bis efforts proved fruitless. BLIND AIAN ROBBED. AUCKLAND, Feb. 2d. A totally blind man. named .McGregor was robbed of ninety pounds on Saturday afternoon. James Symonds appeared in the Court to-day charged with the crime. PALMERSTON V, Feb. 20. The reserved judgment of Justice Ostler was delivered at the Supreme Court in an appeal by the Woodville Borough Council against the decision of Air Free, S.AL, in dismissing informations for alleged breaches of the building by-laws. The appeal was allowed and the matter referred to the .Magistrate to fix penalties. The case was one in which defendant was elutiged with erecting a party wall otherwise than ill accordance with the bylaws and also failing to pull down the wall within a reasonable time after due notice. ’l'lie .Magistrate decided that the law was settled in a previous decision of the Supreme Court m which it was held that the certificate nf the inspector was conclusive that the building was in accordance with the by-law. UNIVERSITY COUNCI L. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 20. The creation of lour separate univeisitjes in place of the present New Zealand University was discussed at the session of the New Zealand University Council to-day. A motion for the establishment of four colleges was defeated. The motion was not put directly to members, a motion that the Council consider the next business on the order paper was put to the meeting and carried by 14 votes to 7 before discussion on the main motion bad properly opened.
