COXCI NATION' COUNCIL PROCEEDINGS. CHR rSTCHURC'H. Jan. 21. There were frequent- exchanges round the Conciliation Council table yesterday when the claims of the Canterbury Drivers’ and Related Trades' Industrial Union of Workers for a new award were being discussed. Mr E. Pnrlane bad just described the conditions under which the men in the employ of the Waimakariri River Trust were working as scandalous. Mr W. C. Prime: You're talking for the Press.
Mr Pnrlnno: \ am not talking for the Press. Mr I’arlane said that lie had known one man living in a leaky tent at the Waimakariri construction camp to have a good suit ruined. “Conditions are scandalous out there." he repeated. Mr C*. Prime; That is a lie. Mr Pnrlane: No, it's not. Mr Prime: If is. Mr fVirlauP: You are a liar, Mr Prime ! “Mr Prime! Oh. Mr Prime!" exclaimed the Commissioner, Mr W. 11. flagger. Mr Parlane :*He said that it was a lie, and I called him a liar. Mr Hagger (to Mr Prime) : T am surprised. Mr Prime: Allow me one second. I wish to withdraw what I said. •■You were at fault, you know that." said the Commissioner. All" Prime: I am sorry. Nil Parlane: Then I withdraw what T said, too; that is about your being a liar. (Laughter). “'Everything else stands,” declared Mr Parlane. “Conditions are scandalous. What I said was true about the leaky tents. I know for myself. It’s not hearsay.” “Afr Horvev,” declared Mr Parlane. “is trying to make out that the members of the trust are little tin gods to the men.” j Air Prime: Statements have- been ; made that are not a lair tiling. j “You are. throwing bouquets about, this morning, ’’ said the Commissioner , Air Parlane: If you want to negoti- j ate very well. Tf not, we’re easy. Me will go to the Court if you like. Mr Hagger: It’s our duty, you know, to try and effect a settlement. And the storm subsided.
