CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Canterbury Education Board was held at Christchurch on Friday. Present: .Messrs C. S. Thompson (chairman), M . A. Banks, J. Maze, W. G. Armitage, AY. H. Winsor, J. G. Gow, E. H. Andrews, C. S. Johnson, R. Wild. T. Hughes, and W. P. Spencer. Appointments confirmed included:— Kokatahi Upper, Mr F. Cutler, sole teacher • Wainiliinihi. Miss M. Knowles, sole teacher. The Agricultural, Manual and Technical Committee reported as follows: A circular memorandum from the Department regarding agricultural instruction in primary school and control of agricultural instructors was read and discussed in conjunction with a copy of a reply to this communication sent to tho Director for Education hv the Taranaki Board. After some consideration it was agreed that the matter he referred to a sub-com-mittee consisting of Messrs Banks, Hughes, Spencer, McLeod and Mondie for the purpose of going into the question and drafting a reply to he sent to the Department. As there were hut four applicants for the position of chief agricultural instructor, probably due to the fact that many teachers would mil see the advertisement in the January Gazette, it was agreed to re-ad vert i-e. PROBATIONERS. Tin l Board appointed 89 probationary teachers, their office of residence being given in parenthesis. Wherever possible prolia i ioner.s are attached to school nears their place of residence, hoard allowance not being allowed. In all 89 have been appointed, and a few more may he later, including the following:—

Alaxwell’s resignation as critic teacher, owing to his appointment to tho Hast ings A\ est School, was accepted. Resignations accepted included:— Totara Elat. Miss C*. S. Potts; Dunganv ilie. Airs M. Norcross. The following substitute assistants on the A'Yost. Coast wore appointed for one year:—

Annie T. Afead. Veronica A. Knoll, Dorothy Donaldson. FOREMAN’S I? EPOR.T. Goldshorough School.—The repairs to school building, shelter shed, and the erection of two new out-houses •ind wood shed also the renewing of the fencing and gates are now finished. Tho painting of the school and outbuildings lias also been carried out. Blackball School. 'The re-hanging of the windows and repairs to sheltei shed and nut-offices are now coniphoe. Tim renairs to spouting will ho put in band directly the plumber is avai 1 - aljle. Blaketown School. — During the month the painting of the interior of this school was put in hand and finished. Evan’s Greek School.—f have this small school framed and ready for erecting and which will he started next week. I hope to bnv it ready for occupation when the schools open. Kumara Teacher's Resilience. --1 E* re-papering 0 f t!,c two bedrooms at this residence is now in hand. Rewanui New School—l he erection of this school is now nearing completion all of the carpentry work ■being' finished. The painters will commence the painting when they have finished at Kumara. Workshop.—During the month the shop men have been employed in making joinery for Rewanui and Evan’s Greek Schools anil furniture for various schools.
