OBITUARY
DR E. EAYENSAVOOD AVAITE. HOBART, Jan. 29. The death is announced of Dr Edgar Ravenswood AA’aite, F.L.S., formerly curator of the Canterbury Museum, aged sixty-two years. Dr Waite was appointed curator of the Canterbury Museum on the death of Captain F. AA . Hutton. AVhile he was in Christchurch he worked on New Zealand fishes, accompanying several trawling expeditions in New Zealand waters to obtain information lor ALuscum bulletins on that branch ol zoology, which lie made a special study. He had worked on Australian fishes and reptiles before lie came to Christchurch. He was appointed to the Canterbury Museum in 190 ti, and resigned in 191.4 to become director of the South Australian National Museum, Adelaide. He was horn at Leeds, England, and was curator of the Afu.seum there from 1888 to 1892, when he was appointed zoologist- to the Australian Museum Sydney. In England Dr AYaite was a member of the C'onehological Society of Groat Britain and Ireland, and joint editor of the " Naturalist.” He was a Fellow of the Linnaean Society of London, and travelled extensively in Europe before coming to Australia. Fie was a member of tbe Canterbury Philosophical Institute's scientific expedition to the Campbell and Auckland Islands, dealing in the reports ol that expedition with fishes and birds. His work includes many papers and pamphlets on natural history.
