THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES
Rejuvenation. One of the most amazing features of Germany’s recovery since the war is tile growth of her mercantile marine, in 1911 Germany owned about 5,500.00!) tons of shipping. In 1921 her total was only 717.000 tons. To-day the official returns show 3.500,000 tons, and her merchant fleet is growing year by year. When peace came, the NordDoutscher Lloyd Line officially stated that, as it had been "robbed” of everyone one ol its ocean-going steamers hv the Allies, it was starting its career all over again “ as from 1857.” It has made rapid progress since then, and to-da'v it owns 810.000 tons of shipping. But it has been far outstripped by its great rival, the Hani-burg-A merikii line. which owns 1.200,000 tons.
