INSPECTING DOCTORS. (Received this day at 9.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, Oct. 11. Doctors Robertson, Dick and Atkinson have arrived after three months’ tour of North America visiting twenty seven States and the Province of Ontario, inspecting institutions devoted to public health work and education. They leave for England on Thursday, whence after a fortnight’s stay Drs Robertson and Atkinson return to Australia, wliilo Dr Dick proceeds to the Continent to continue his studies.
All praise the uniform courtesy and help received in America in pursuance of their inquiries, which were made in conjunction with Rockfeller. They do voted attention chiefly to questions of general policy and administration, and their conclusions naturally depend upon further study of documents whicji they collected. Three interesting fea tures of public health work with bearings on Australian conditions are chlorination of water and sewerage disposal, pasteurization of milk and public health and nursing. They found the water supply and sewerage disposal one combined problem, water nearly everywhere being chlorinated and sewerage in many cases denatured before it was permitted to enter rivers etc. Dr Robert Spit expressed the hope that Australian towns in planning such works might obviate the necessity of expensive processes. Pasteurization was found t-o be supervised by the authorities but supervision was complicated by the great number of pasteurization plants. Fewer centralised plants woidd make provision more effeettive and easy. Great emphasis is placed on the work of the public health nurse in America, while Australia is familiar with this field it is loss specialized there.
