SOUTH SEA TRAGEDY
COMMISSIONER AND OTHERS MURDERED.
(Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.)
(Received this day at 10.15 a.m.) SUVA, Oct. 7
The High Commissioner of the Western Pacific received a wireless message stating, a trader who arrived from Tillage, Solomon Islands, in tlio Government steamer Auki, reported that District Commissioner Bell, Cadet Lillies, 15 native police and the crew of the vessel were murdered by bush natives at Sinarago, north-east coast of Maluitia Island, the date not being mentioned. The boatswain of the Auki and four wounded police were the sole survivors. Bell and Lillies were buried at Kwai.
The only Europeans in the vicinity are Mr and Mrs Andrew, of the Seventh Day Adventist Mission. They have a vessel which can easily proceed to Ivwai, where the South Sea evangelist mission is stationed. No anxiety is felt for their safety.
It is the worst outrage reported from the Solomon Islands since the first Government officials were killed.
