WESTLAND COMPETITIONS SOCIETY .

The curtain for 1927 Competitions was rung down at the Soldiers’ Hall last night when a winding-up social was held to present the trophies won at the late gathering. There was a large attendance of young and old. The first part was a concert contributed to by the Competitors, Air D. J. Evans (President) presiding, supported by Rev. G. Knowles-Smitli and Rev. Father Finerty (Vice-Presidents). Elocutionary items were contributed by Joy Ward, Nooleen AVoriningtou, Connie Staines, P. McGavin, A. Coles, Aliss Honey, Aliss Aeale; vocal numbers by Cora Lynn, Pearl Dowell, Aliss Knight, Miss Morris, Airs Turnbull: instrumental items by D. Heinz, P. Renton, ATisses Jacobs (2), and ballet danced by Alisses Stevenson, AleWhirter and Staines. All the items were well received and roundly applauded. The Chairman in proceeding to present the trophies congratulated the tutors on the success of their pupils, and the competitors on the line spirit shown one to the other. Ihe good work done by the Committee "as acknowledged, and special praise accorded Air Alorris, the Secretary and Aliss Daly, theofficial acccnipanist. If was announced that the general meeting of the Society would he hold on the 18th. prox., when a new committee would he elected, and dates for next season gone into, the special desire being not to trespass on the school days, and so affect the school work. Pleasure was expressed at the local move being made to establish a dramatic club, and the effort to provided entertainment also for ihe inmates of the hospitals, where it was proposed shortly to give conceits. The Rev H. G. Knowles-Smitli and llev Father Finerty spoke, expressing pleasure at the all-round success of the Competitions, and stressing tlit*ii community value. The efforts of the President were also praised. Trophies were presented as follows: Newman Cup, Convent Choral Party haulier. Convent Action Chorus; Sodden Shakespeare Cup, Air P. J. Alc(irail]; Ladies Shakcsperean Rose Bawl. Aliss L. Honey; Dr Kennedy’s Special Oration, Air 3M. Daly; Air Bush's Special (must successful competitor) Nooleen WormingtonAir .Moss’s Succial, A’alerie Nightingale. On behalf of the Committee presentations were made also to Aliss Duly and Afr Alorris, hoTli of whom were roundly applauded. Air Morris replied on liehalf of both recipients. Supper was (hen served by the ladies’ committee, which had made ample preparations, and all were well regaled. Dancing followed, the juveniles being given an hour in which to hold their revels, and much use they made of their license. Afterwards the seniors had the floor, and dancing was indulged in. ATisscs Daly. Jacobs (21. Lynn. Messrs Fowler and Stevenson supplying the music, and all having a good time. Shortly before midnight “Auld Lang Syne,” and the National Anthem concluded quite a fe.sjtive evening.
