RANFURLY SHIELD. WON BY CANTERBURY. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association. PALMERSTON N., Sept. 7. In the Ranfurly Shield match to-day Canterbury defeated Mnnawhenua by 17 points to 6, before a crowd estimated at eight thousand. The ground was in good condition, considering the recent rains, and the weather was ideal for football. The forwards were evenly matched, but the Manawhenua hacks were outclassed from stai't- to finish. Tho scores about represent the merits of tho two teams. Manawhenua showed an improvement in the second spell, hut lost many opportunities through the wild passing of the five-eighths, who were continually fed by Parata at half. Dailey took a mark in a good position, and put over n fine kick, making Canterbury three up in the first four minutes of the game. Following on play which was mostly confined to M.anawhenua’s quarters, Dailey tricked the opposition with a couple of dummies from a scrum near the line, and fell over to score. Lilburne converted.
