THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS.
(Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.) GENEVA, Sept. 3. Information from Brussels indicates that the Belgian Cabinet has rejected the International Enquiry under tho impression that Germany is insisting on an inquiry to cover all questions concerning war atrocities. Germans here deny that Berlin has advanced demands extending the scope and affirm tho acceptance is based strictly on the Belgium proposal.
The Council of the League at the first public sitting referred the ]>oint connected with the Danzig .Municipal Loan, to the Financial Committee. It heard Herr Strcssniann on the work of the Economic Committee, and Paul Roncour on the work of the Committee on intellectual co-operation. Sir A. Chamberlain in the afternoon participated in meeting the Japanese and Chilean delegates, arid forming a. committee of mediation upon the dispute between Hungary and Itoumanin, with reference to the compensation payable by the latter for the expropriation of Hungarian property in Transylvania. No progress was made towards a compromise and afterwards Sir A. Chamberlain had a conference with the Greek Foreign Minister, who later expressed satisfaction, and mentioned that his colleague, the Minister of Finance was negotiating on satisfactory conditions for a loan of £9,000,000 for the stabilisation of Greek currency.
It is learned that Poland has drawn up an elaborate New World Wide nonaggression Pact which Sokol will expound to the League at. the earliest possible moment.
GENEVA HAPPENINGS. (Received this day at 0.?0 a.in.) LONDON, Sept. -1. The question of Canada’s potential candidature for one of the non-per-manent seats at Geneva is at last being mooted says the “Daily lelegrapli’s” diplomatic correspondent. It was no sooner mentioned than intensive propaganda was begun hv opponents, fearing an increase of Ilritisli influence. It is being suggested that Canada is not suitable because she would he represented by a delegate, who is not of sufficient eminence, also that neither Canada nor the Dominions generally desire such an honour. It is certain, however, that Canada would (accept, if offered; also that her representatives in no way laclc distinction.
