- (By Telegraph—Per Press Association. A AIAHENO SCENE. (Received this day at 11.0 a.m.) SYDNEY', Aug. 31. A settlement of the Maheno trouble was reached when three stewards requested they lx* discharged. This course was agreed to by the Captain and the remainder of the men intimated they were willing to sail. Tho positions of these three men were not filled. The vessel was scheduled to depart at 5 o’clock, but ten minutes after that a motor car containing firemen drew up at the gangway, and without warning one of tho firemen dealt a blow at a camera- in the hands of n photographer. It fell to the wharf and the plates were* scattered about. A policemen asked the fireman’s name and the .M a hen o’s crew who were leaning over tho rail, immediately declared if the fireman was arrested the boat would not sail. As no notice was taken they filed off tho ship. They were then told the man would sail with them, so they went aboard again. Tho gangway was lowered and the ship moved away. As she did so, a seams' threw a large "potato at the photographer, who was still presenting liis camera towards tho men. Then followed ft volley of potatoes from other members of the crew. Fortunately not many people were on the wharf, but the missiles fell among them and Gray, assistant-manager of the Union Company ,was struck on tho head and his hat knocked off.
THE IMVERINA. SYDNEY', Aug. 31. Smooth soas enabled a quantity of coal to be taken aboard the stranded steamer Itiverina and tho vessel nonlies awaiting a favourable tide. A channel has formed where she formerly lay, the bank of sand on which she is resting fast, being eroded by tho seas. The ship lias been moved 220 ft. forward from the original position. LABOR EXPULSIONS. SYDNEP, Aug. 31. The Australian Labour Party Executive has decided to expel Mutch, Ohann and Evatt, former Ministers, and Murphy, from the Labour Party for their decision to oppose endorsed Labour candidates at the forthcoming elections. NEW GUINEA POSITION. SYDNEY, August 31. Senator Chapman, one of the party of Federal Legislators who have been investigating conditions in the mandated terctary, New Guinea, makes serious charges of dummying in conV nection with expropriated German plantations, and demands a Boyinl Commission of enquiry. He also says Chinese are increasing rapidly, owing to tho high birth rate. They control most of thef local trade. There are two Chinese hotels at Rabaul to which (Europeans are compelled to go, because there is insufficent accommodation elsewliere. The Chinese position and their increase is regarded seriously bv local people.
SEAMENS DECISION. ADELAIDE, August 31. Port Adelaide Seamens Union has decided to boycott American goods as a protest against tho Socca-Vanzetti execution. STEAMER. FIRE OUT. ADELAIDE, August 31. The Otterpool fire has been extinguished discharging has commenced. QUEENSLAND STRIKE. BRISBANE, August 31. A meeting of southern sections of railway men decided to support the men on strike in tho northern section and to carry on the strike until all the strikers are reinstated without loss of status and further that they are not intimidated by' the ultimatum issued by the pseudo Labour Government. MELBOURNE, August 3L A meeting of the executive of Victorian branch of tho Railway Union resolved to support Queensland members in upholding unionism.
