AMERICAN CABLE NEWS

(Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.) AIR. CRASH. VANCOUVER, Aug. 10. A message from San Diego, California, states that Lieutenants George Coveil and R. W. Waggener of the United States Navy were killed to-day when the machine crashed as it was taking off for a flight to San Francisco, where it was intended to hop off for Honolulu with fourteen other entrants on Friday. GENEVA FAILURE. NEW YORK, Aug. 9. The “New York Times” says that ■at Rapid City, President Coolidge today explained the American position re naval defence. After the conference with Air Wilbur, the President intimated that the Geneva failure must not l»o made a case for naval competition and as far as his influence could lie exerted, the United States would continue with its moderate naval building programme, completing five years’ building plans to round out the fleet and provide necessary light cruisers and other auxiliary craft. The United States would build only what was needed to strengthen the fighting effectiveness of capital ships. The failure of Geneva did not justify the United States to consider everything beyond its defensive requirements. His belief whs that American sentiment would not support the demand for auxiliary craft, placing America on the same relative strength as Britain.
