IRISH AFFAIRS

(Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON. Aug. 10. A Gazette states that Air Cosgrave, in the Dail, replying to Colonel Al.oore's motion lor the rejection of the Public Safety Bill 011 the ground that coercion acts were always futile, said that the Government intended to crush crime wholesale whatever the consequences. DUBLIN, Aug. ID. It is expected there is to be a slight majority of flic Republican Party meeting in favour of taking the oath as the expedient to enabling them to enter the Dail and vote against the Public Safety Bill.

There is a probability that Mr Cosgrave will lose his working majority resulting in an election or invitation to Do Valera, to form a Government. LONDON, Aug. 10.

Whether to take the oath of allegiance and forsake principle, or reconcile the consciences by hanging on. to their seats, is the problem confronting the Fioniia Fail Party, of the Free State, since the passing of the Public Safety Act.

'l'lie Daily Herald’s Dublin correspondent learns that the party, in view of the changed circumstances, has decided to reconsider its attitude, and meets to-night to discuss whether it were better to take the oath in order tor repeal the Act at the first opportunity. It is understood that De Valera is opposed to the oath under any circumstances.

A Government defeat is likely if the Fienna enter the Dail in a body.
