THE COUNCIL. WELLINGTON, Aug. 0. The Legislative Council met at 2.30

to-day. AVhnkntnne County Council Empowering and Loan .Moneys Diversion Bill, and tlie Cliristcliureh City Sanitation Empowering Amendment Bill 1 was received from the House and read the first time. Subsequently tbe latter measure was put through all other stages and passed without amendment. Hon Sir T. Mackenzie gave notice to move that in view of the great risks pedestrians are constantly exposed to ti.rougli reckless driving of motor vehicles, together with the alarming increase in fatalities, the Council is of

opinion that the law dealing with such 'matters requires amendment in orderthat reasonable protection may he provided for people. Hon. Newman moved, that in the of the Council it is in the paramount interests to establish a ig products export industry. The question should be considered of remitting the Customs duty on maize and other food products necessary for the economical operation and development of that business. After some discussion the debate was adjourned. The Council' rose at 1.22 p.m. until Wednesday week the 17th August.

THE HOUSE. The House met at 2.30. The Fair Bents Bill, introduced by Mr Savage, was read a fu st time. The afternoon sitting was occupied with a discussion on the Discharged Soldiers Settlements report and on the Tourist Departmental and Immigration reports, which were laid on the table. At 7.30 Mr Holland, Leader of the Opposition, opened the debate on the Budget, and was followed bv Hon. Rolleston. On the motion of Air Sidey. the debate was adjourned, and the House rose at 9.30 till z. 30 on Tuesday.
