Comment Ox The 1-inanciaj. Statement. The Statement is a review ot the financial position, hut it is uninspiring. There is disclosed no definite policy. The Minister is content to live from year to year, and it he is aiming at the attainment of any definite goal he has not disclosed what that goal is or how he intends to reach it. Fast year some Reform papers charac-tei'D-d the Financial Statement as “timid.” This year they will find no signs of anything courageous. —Lyttelton Times. The fundamentally vicious land-tax is to remain unaltered, and the tact that the Treasury would lose a large sum if the present unfair basis of company taxation were revised is regarded as reason sufficient for the continuance of the unfairness. Perhaps the real reason for the Government’s unwillingness to reduce taxation is its fear that adverse circumstances might require a re-imposition of any levy that is remitted. This fear is surely not in harmony with the Alinister’s concluding remark that “the Dominion i.s gradually freeing itself from temporary difficulties and steadily working towards more favourable conditions.” —(Jirisft hurch Press.
