CRICKET.

NEW ZEALAND TEAM AT HOME (Australian Press Association & Sun.) (Received this day at 9.60 a.nt.) LONDON, Aug. 4. Hobbs and Sandham resumed Surrey’s first innings before an attendance which was slightly larger than Saturdays and the spectators were rewarded with some rare holiday cricket. Hobbs was in his gayest; mood and sneaked singles constantly. His partnership with Sandham was the fortieth time they have put up the century for a first wicket, equalling Hobbs’ record with Hayward. Sandham was eventually disposed of by Dempster with a breaking ball, which utterly deceived him and skittled off his pads into the wicket. Hobbs was caught off one of Blunt’s slow howls, but not before lie had reached 116. He and Sandham taught the New Zealand howlers that it does not pay to deliver two good and four indifferent balls per over. Even now. though the tour is twothirds over, the bowlers, with the exception of Merritt, were unable !o manage consistency of length. Though he slid not get a wicket Alleott’s nice

easy action much impressed pavilion veterans. He kept Hobbs quiet, yet was more uncertain in length than the others. He is to he specially coached here in the hope of correcting his faults. Only two wickets had fallen at 200 and the Surrev men were then apparently told to go at the howling. The crowd relished their venturesome hitting and -equally appreciated the fact that the howlers, despite their looseness, were, not entirely without guile. The fielding was alert and dames at the wickets showed himself equal to the besL County standard. It

tvas good team work to get rid of the last eight wickets in 85 minutes for tin additional 116 runs. Merritt and Blunt, however, suffered rather badly. Dempster came out with much the best

bowling analysis. When New Zealand went in again the batsmen treated Surrey to some'of its own .sauce. Dempster and Mills, by the tea adjournment, had put on 66 without loss. The former, when wwo set. was unlucky to be howled by probably the best ball that Holmes had delivered in Ihe match. It whipped in like lightning and carried the hail .66 paces. Page then joined Dempster and the pair set themselves to flog the County howling in Hobbs’ and ,Sandbain’s style. The latter quite lived up to the title bestowed on him of the New Zealand “Macartney” and made numbers of sparkling drives. Ho was missed at 75 and then reached 100 out of 166 in 110 minutes. By the time stumps were drawn for the day they had put on 115 in 1:1 hours and the total was 1 for 197. NEW ZEALAND.—First Innings. Dempster, e Holmes, b Geary ... 6
