TRAINING OF BOA'S. CHRISTCHURCH, June la. “That this meeting enters an emphatic protest against the action of the Defence Department in penalising boys attending the Telegraph College by forcing them to make up their lost time at drill.” This was a resolution moved by J. Dickson, and carried Iv a very large majority at a meeting of the combined apprenticeship committees and others interested in the training of apprentices held in the Chamber of Commerce Hall on Saturday.

The Collector of Customs said Nang came lo New Zealand in April 192->, and had his permit extended several times mi the ground ef ill-health, but the last extension over Kin tho time limit. Ihe Collector said the first available steamer would leave New Zealand on June 24th. and Nang could he placed aboard her.
The Chinese Masonic Society meanwhile are prepared to enter a bond of one hundred pounds if he is given his freedom. The Alagistrate made an mdei that accused come up for sentence on June 25th. pointing out, if he failed to leave New Zealand he would he dealt with drastically.

A wrestling match for the championship of New Zealand took place at Taihapc on Sotufdav night, between Kr n Anderson of Palmerston North and Charles Rollaml of Auckland. It was won by Anderson, two falls to one. Anderson bail the challenger on the defensive throughout the contest. Anderson was List 21 b and I’ulluud 12st.
STRIKE AT All A RUN I WORKS. TE AWAMUTU. June 13. All workmen engaged at Arnpimi electrical works have declared a general strike at mid-night on Sunday. The dispute arises out of the payment for overtime. It was stated the employers should pay double rates for all overtime in excess of four hours, and neglect to do so gives rise to the present dispute. A mass meeting of men was held yesterday and reached a decision to declare a general strike from mid-night. Tin’s morning J. Kelly (President) and E. Lake (Secretary) of the union went to hold a conference with Armstrong Whitworth's representatives, hut a conference was refused by the company, who stipulated that tho men must return to work before any consideration is possible. 1 landman (tho company malinger at Arapuni) at present is in Auckland. Meanwhile work is at a standstill.
CLOSE FIRE CALL. CHRISTCHURCH, June 13. Fighting their way through a fog of blinding smoke while burning timbers cracked and fell about them, Malcolm Anderson, bis wife and three children, escaped death in their beds, when a fire destroyed their home early this morning, for the second time in sixteen months. Tho house which was situated on Lincoln road, was behind one of two shops, now all are in ashes. The insurance amounts to £IOOO. Tho neighbours bad to come to tlic family's assistance, as they escaped to the street clad only in their night attire.
