CHINESE TROUBLE.

POSITION AT PEKIN. SHANGHAI. June 7. The greatest concern is felt in foreign circles at Pekin, as tile result of the uncertainty as to the I'nitod States policy. There are continued rumours as to an American evacuation and matters are still in the balance. The United States Minister, Mr MacMarray, favours defending the American Legation at Pekin in cooperation with Britain, Japan. France and others, but the Washington authorities have given orders insisting that no shot he fired on the Cantonese. This is tantamount to an cv,-i"ic tion order. Defence otherwise would be farcical.

Telegrams are being exchanged between Peking and AAashington h\ which it is hoped authority may he given to hold the l .S.A. legation t>v every means available.

Meanwhile the British, Japanese, French and Italians are preparing to defend the Legation quarter. Ex-ser-vicemen are rallying to assist the regulars who have been sent to Peking as a protection.

Reports from the fronts are s"ar There is no sign of the Northerners rallying. A compromise has boon discussed, hut in view of their successes, it is not thought they will abandon their purpose of taking Peking and ousting Peking Government.

CHINESE FIGHTING. lIONG KONG, June 8

A naval wireless front Hankow states further fighting appears to have broken out on the Honan front. Wounded Nationalists are arriving in large numbers. It is reported many hundreds were killed on both sides.
