REPORT DENIED. WELLINGTON, June 3

Mr D. C‘. Bates, Government -Meteorologist. stated to-night to a "Dominion” representative that the notification which appeared in newspapers throughout the Dominion on June Ist with regard to his appointment as climatologist in the Meteorological Office is both unofficial and incorrect. He stated also that he was unaware of the source of the notification.

A PECULIAR STORY. WELLINGTON, June 3. With his throat cut and using a handkerchief as a bandage, a middleaged man told a strange story when approached by a constable at James Smith’s corner at 2.30 this morning. He said be had got the worse tor liquor last night and lay down on ibc beach at Oriental Bay to sleep it ofl. He awoke suddenly to find bis throat cut. The man, wlio gave bis name as James Brady, aged fifty-five, single, a seaman by occupation, said lie came irom Auckland three days ago. He is in hospital. His condition is not serious. The police are investigating.

MOTOR FATALITY. WELLINGTON, June 3. A Buick car, driven by AH' Coleman, 11. Macfarlnne Street, Wellington, and containing Mrs Helen Teller, 14. Austin Street, confectioner, Airs Mabel Coleman, her two children and F. O’Rourke, of Pirie Street, was pushed over a sixty or seventy foot hank two miles from .Tohnsonville by a Buick car which did not stop. Airs Toiler was killed. Airs Afahel Coleman sustained a dislocated liip. O’Rourke is suffering front minor injuries.

A search is being made for the driver of the other Buick oar.

BOY’S DEATH. WELLINGTON. June 5. A child. Robert Hunt aged’3] years of 30 Hamilton Rond, who was in the brightest of spirits on Thursday morning, suddenly turned black and commenced to choke as he left the table after the mid-day meal. Dr Luke was urgently summoned, but be being busy bis wife came first. The child was in a very bad way when she came, its heart getting weaker and weaker under Ihe terrible strain, and Dr Luke ,wlien he arrived, fought hard to save the child’s life, but with a sob the little follow, who was known as “the suitshine of the street.” rolled over dead. As nothing was found in the throat that could cause death, Dr P. P. Lynch pathologist at the Wellington Hospital conducted a post-mortem examination and stated at the inquest on Saturday that he found a little piece of peanut in the right bronchus running from the windpipe to the lungs. In Dr Lynch’s opinion, the child died from asphyxia.

A verdict was returned that Robert Hunt died on June 2 from asphyxia by a foreign body accidentally finding its way into bis right bronchus.

BOOKIES FINED. WANGANUI, June 4. Dave Wilson and Charles Byers, leading bookmakers, whose place was raided yeserday were fined £75 each this morning on a charge, of keeping a common gaming house.

A SUICIDE. AIABTON, June 6. Jas. Kenney, aged 63, a native of Ireland, single, who had resided at .Marion for many years, was lottnd hanging from a rafter at the rear of .'i bach in High Street at noon yesterday.
