THE BOROUGH WATER SUPPLY
At last week’s meeting of the Borough Council, the question of the local water supply was discussed. The Clerk had received replies to inquiries from other Councils concerning the quality of pipes in use. and their recommendation, as the renewing of the main from Lake Kanieri was a matter of urgency. Mr Parry made a suggestion that the Council should consider a scheme from local supply, stating that in his opinion, the water could he pumped from local sources, which appeared to he iu abundance at a short depth all over the town. f .I he water was doubtless pure, and certainly cool and free from pathogenic bacteria, a matter of considerable importance in. the interests -of health. His contention was that the supply could lie automatically electrically pumped into a water Lower of sufficient height, giving satisfaction for general purposes, and in the ov >
of a lire occurring, powerful auxiliary pumps could immediately be commenced boosting the required pressure. Mr Parry mentioned, considering the extra electric power about to be developed at Kuinara, the Hokitika Borough could obtain the necessary elecirical supply cheaply, adding that the cost of the lower and pumping mac-h----i uerv would lie under £->OOO. which was a very big consideration in comparison with the cost of renewing the main, pipe from Lake Kanieri, ami
therefore a matter of momentous im-
portance to the ratepayers. The Mayor (Mr Perry) thought the suggestion a very good one, and as the matter of renewal had to he faced, and might easily cost £20,000. Mr Parry’s scheme seemed worlby of consideration.
