ATHLETICS.
[Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.] GERMAN ATHLETES. BERLIN, March 8. Germany is making a gigantic bid to lead the world in sport, in preparation for the coming Olympic games is in full swing on a most extensive scale. The athletic youth is being mobilised for the contest with a zeal not short of fanatic.. A delegation has already visited Holland to reconnoitre the ground, has leased an hotel and several boarding houses, sixteen miles distant and arranged for a fleet of ears for conveyance. Germany will be represented by four hundred, selected from six million members of sports organisations. The chief hopes of victory are centred in boxing, swimming and running. The sum of £40,000 of which the Government lias provided £B,OOO will bo expended in the preparation ot eight huge stadiums being constructed in the principal cities, together with thousands of municipal sports grounds, out of State municipal funds to provide running places for national athletes unparalleled in the history of the world.
