A crop of oats grown in the Amborlcy district lias threshed null at tlio remarkably high figure of ninety-two bushels to flic acre. The crop, however, reports a Christchurch paper was not a large one, being of only fourteen acres. Good yields have been reported from other districts. It is believed that there will be many more extraordinarily heavv yields.
The ill ini rase of hag-snntrhing in Christchurch within the? last couple of months lias come under the notice of the police. A young woman was given a fright in Caledonian Road on Tuesday night at 11 o'clock, when a man pounced upon her from the shadow of a fence, and made off with her hag. She screamed and the man made his escape on a bicycle, which had been left conveniently near. The bag contained a few shillings and the key to the young woman’s room.
Next Saturday entries for all events at the coining gala day on Cass Square and the competitions at the Soldiers’ Hall in the evening, close. There should he many interesting competitions as well varied programmes will he put through. The general committee controlling the hig day and night will meet during the coming week to finalise the preparations. From tho general interest being manifested there should he a very .successful gathering, the event being for a. very worthy cause, to augment the funds for All Saints’ [Memorial Church Building.
Pennies are about to he coined by tho Royal Mint, for the first time since (says tho London ‘•Times’’). The heavy demand for coins usually made just before Christmas found an ample supply of half-pennies, farthings and silver coins, which had been minted at the usual rate throughout the year, hut revealed the fact that tho hig reserves of pennies had at last been put into circulation. The production of pennies was stopped in 1922 at the request of certain public undertakings which had huge accumulations of bronze coins. Since then, all demands for pennies had been referred by the Mint to the banks which were known to hold large supplies. It appears that there is no longer a surplus, and the minting of pennies will, therefore, he resumed almost immediately.
A plea that Mr Coates should not he asked to make too many speeches on his return from the Imperial Conference was made at the Auckland Rotary Club luncheon on Monday by Mr S. Al. Bruce. Prime Minister of Australia. “During my five months away I have made an average of between two and two a-half speeches a day.” Mr Bruce said amid laughter. “T spent most of my time speech-making in England, and on behalf of your Prime Minister I ask that lie he not subjected to what every Prime Minister is after returning from the Imperial Conference. To attend an Imperial Conference is to realise you work harder than ever before in your life; hut your friends meet you when you return, sav how pleased they are to see you and then say you have had a topping holiday. I know it would be useless to fmake such a plea to my people, but you may be more civilised here.” (Laughter) .

Tile death occurred at the Grey Hospital yesterday morning of Air John Dickens a well-known resident of Cnbden, aged 90 years. Deceased was by occupation a platelayer, and was engaged in the construction of the railway from Greymouth in ReiTtoii. Hater he entered the service of the Greymoiith Harbour Board, and resided at Cubdon for many years, until his admittance recently to the Old People's Home. Deceased's wifi' died a few years ago. but lie is survived by two daughters residing at Wellington.
Ts the spirit of the early pioneers dying out? The question was answered in the negative by the Governor-Gen-eral (Sir James Kcrgnsson) when lie returned from a visit to the North (states the “Xew Zealand Herald.”) His Excellency explained that lie had studied the people met on the tour, and had found living examples of the old pioneers. “People talk as it the race of old pioneers has died out. That is not so. We saw, in going through the country, men and women exhibiting exactly the same qualities of resource, endurance and courage as those possessed bv (heir grandparents. It lias been a perfect evo-opener.” He added that through meeting the people be had realised the great work they were doing in building up the country.
The fortnightly meeting of Westland Lodge. No. S 9. V.A.O.D. was held in the lodge room on Thursday evening when a. fair attendance was presided over bv A.l). Bro. B. Ecrgusson. Before proceeding with the routine business of the lodge, a vote of sympathy and condolence was carried in silence to the Buatapu Brother his wife, and relatives oil the loss of their baby girl. The inward correspondence read and received, outward read and approved. Bards reported sick members doing fairlv well. Sick pay to tbe amount of £ll 18s 4d was passed for payment. The secretary of the hospital fund then made reference to the subscription, etc., relating to the scheme. It was also announced that next lodge night being quarter night, also the night of the competition for the cup for which twelve competitors have entered. the officers are expecting the lodge room to bo packed to the doors. After further discussions re arrangements, etc., the lodge was closed in harmoiiv.
