District Railway Engineer conferred with the Alayor and Seocrtary of the Royal Visit Reception Committee on AYcdnesday. and intimated the Department would attend to decorations at tlie railway station on the occasion of the arrival of the Royal Party. The attention of the Engineer was drawn also to the necessity of improving tlie AY’eld Street road crossing. This was promised, as also the necessary drainage of Die station yard to minimise the flooding of AY’eld .Street, footpath used by pedestrians.

Probable entrants for elocutionary competition next mouth should start preparing in their respective sections. There are classes for hoys and girls of the second standard and Tower; for hoys and girls of the fifth and sixth standards, and an open male and female section (any age) for which an own choice and a set selection are provided. The first of the annual excursions to this district took place to-day, the Blackball district excursion train passing through this morning on route to Lake Mahinnpua.

The death occurred yesterday at Northlands, AVeHington, 'of Air- John Gandell, formerly of Greymouth. Deceased, who was the fourth son of Mrs Gandell. formerly of Greymouth. and now of Christchurch, served in the European AYar. He had gone to AAYlingtou about five years ago, and had been ill for some years. He leaves n wife 'ami two children, and is also survived by four brothers; Norman (Gisborne), Ernest (Wellington), Albert (V.S.S. Co), and Allan (Christchurch).

One of the. special features of the swimming carnival last evening was the special display by Air AY. Koesing, who is now residing in Hokitika, and will he in charge of Air H. M. Coulson’s dentistry during, the latter’s approaching holiday. Air Keesing gave an exhibition of fancy diving and various styles of swimming, and those present marked their appreciation of the several styles by hearty applause. In addition Air Keesing acted as a judge of the diving events. He is a decided acquisition in local swimming circles. Mr Keesing was New Zealand diving champion in 1921.

On AYcdnesday evening a very enjoyable dunce was held in the Rimu Town Hall, the occasion being the 2lsi. birthday of Aliss Eileen. Boyd, daughter „f Air and Airs ,T. Boyd, of "R.imu. Quite a large number gathered tor the event and the evening past off most successfully. All excellent supper was served, arrangements fur which were in the capable hands of Airs Preston. Durin.r the supper a birthday cake, with twenty-one candles was cut by the guest." Air J. Ho war-, in. a. short sjuioeli explained the object of the tunetiou and on behalf of those present extended to Aliss Boyd their congratulations on her becoming of age. Air T. Boyd suitable responded on behalf of Pis sister and thanked all those who helped to make the evening such a success. Dancing was then indulged in. the music, for which "as capably rendered by Air C, Ross’ Orchestra.
