MAIN HIGHWAYS COUNCIL

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 17th

The Council met at the Public Works Department, Greymouth, at 7.30 p.m. Present: Messrs H. A. Wilkinson (Chairman), J. X. Powell (Buller), W . Clayton 'lnangahua), J. Higgins (Grey), D. J. Evans (Westland). The Chairman extended a welcome to Mr Clayton, newly appointed. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE, From Alain Highways Board re nuraher of Motor Vehicles registered in the Dominion at 30th June.—Received. From Alain Highways Board re annual review of main highways.—Received. Buller deviation road to be declared in lieu of the Punt road. From Westland County Council asking for declaration : 'of the road from Kokatnhi to Koiterangi a main highway.—Received. Copy\ of letter sent to Highways Board for approval. From Alain Highways Board referring to classification of main highways in No. 12 District.—Received. From Main Highways Board approving Buller County’s classification of highways.—Received. From Grey County regarding weighing heavy traffic on main highway. Received. AH* Sloss to be appointed an inspector. From D. J. Evans asking that the Ross to Waiho section he declared a. second class highway. ; —Received. From same rc supplies of bitumen and asphaltic road oil for season 192627.—Received.

From same re meetings of District Highway Councils.—Received, Chairman of Highways Board to he invited to next meeting.

With regard to expenditure in' boroughs it was explained the Councils had not applied in time for last year’s grant, but the amount was carried forward as a liability for this year. 11l respect to the progress of the bridgewoi-ks on the main highway in Westland the Chairman stated the Totara river bridge would be completed immediately. A small culvert bridge near Clare’s, Ross Road, would next receive attention. As soon as finished,

Parker’s Creek bridge on the new deviation near Wataroa would he put in ; hand. The following bridge for attention by the Department’s staff would ho the small bridge on the Ross Road

near the Kokatahi track. The plans for Dry Creek bridge were approved and the material ordered. The piles for Cowhide bridge were delivered and the remainder of the material was expected shortly, when the erection would proceed By the County bridge staff,

which would build also two other bridges on the main south .road for the Department.
