Charlotte Alalain, a widow, was charged at the Police Court before Mr Uutten, -H.M.. that during the years 1923, 1924, 1925 and 1926 she received a larger pension than she m.is justly entitled to. It was stated tho defendant received payments from .in estate wliioh she did not declare to the Pensions Board and lias been overpaid £-178. The Department did not Jesiru a heavy penalty. The case was arouglil us a warning to (?thcrsi, and would be satisfied if defendant would refund Itbo amount overpaid. ■ A motor ear conveying Aoteu Boa A (Lori entertainers, crashed over a bank on a slippery road at Riverhfead, a full twenty-five feet, and landed upside down. In the front seat weie J. Bradv (driver), his daughter Josephine, and -Miss Olive Hodge. In the hack seat were Aliss Afonnn and Hepini AA'aretiniu (sisters) and Grace AAitheis. Those in the back scat were thrown clear. The other three were pinned under the car. Aliss Brady sustaind severe internal injuries and the others were badly bruised. The clir was unlawfully used on the previous night m a joy riding expedition, when it is .bought the steering gear was damag'd. APPEAL DISMISSED. AUCKLAND. Sept. 9. Chief Justice Skerrett heard an appeal by Thomas Watson Arthur from the judgment of the Magistrate in granting his wife a separation and guardianship on tlie grounds of alleged persistent cruelty. The parties were married in England while the appellant was with the N.Z. Expeditionary Force. Annie E. Arthur said she had known her husband onlv one month when they were married in 1919. His behaviour was peculiar. He used to lock himself in. his cabin on the voyage to New Zealand and ignore her. After a conciliation she complained to him of the obnoxious behaviour of a fellow passenger, and her husband threatened the mini with a revolver and was placed under arrest. AVitness detailed alleged acts of cruelty in New Zealand and said she had to seek protection in the home of Mr and Alls Lander. The latter couple stated in evidence that Arthur called at their house in a violent rage and demanded his wife and her clothes and said he would truss her up like a fowl. Appellant, in evidence, gave a categorical denial of the wife's allegations. Three of his brothers and two other witnesses corroborated his evidence. His Honour said he was satisfied the wife’s evidence had been sufficiently corroborated. He dismissed the appeal with costs and referred the question of maintenance hack to the Magistrate.
A PRESENTATION. AUCKLAND, Sept. 9. On behalf of the Auckland Sports Club a presentation was made of a solid silver cup to the representatives of the Dunedin Returned Soldiers Association in appreciation of it having sent two players to compote in the championship events. John Massey, aged 24, pleaded guilty to fourteen charges of breaking, enteiiug and theft and was committed for sentence. SAVINGS BANK IMPROVEMENTS AUCKLAND, Sept. 9. The Savings Bank Trustees have accepted a tender for £17,696 for alteration and additions to the main building in Queen §t.
