Sutcliffe was never comfortable and was further shaken hv a nasty blow in the ribs by a hall from Gregory. Hobbs played all the howling with confidence, driving to the on and hitting to leg with strokes full of power. Tyldoslcy. at 13. gave a difficult chance to ‘Woodfull, but was unlucky in striking a. ball from the shoulder of the hat giving Gregory an easy catch. Holmes and Hobbs carried on brightly, the former being stylish, and placed the ball well through the slips, also showing smart foot work. Hobbs played a specially attractive innings till the board showed 15-1 wliciii he was smartly .stumped. The third wicket had produced (55 runs. Hobbs score included 8 fours. A feature of the afternoon’s pl.iv was the smart fielding of Woodfull and Grimmett. Tt. was very noticeable that Holmes lost enterprise when Hobbs left and after adding forty-four with the aid of Jupp who made a lively start, he Wunely returned a ball to Mailcy. Jupp played very quietly, and was stumped through going out to one from Mailcy when the total was 202 for (5. The remaining batsmen quickly succumbed to the wiles of Mailcy and Grimmett. Australian had only five minutes to piiy before slumps were drawn.
